Pages: 1 2 About Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur UniversityNagpur University, now known as Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, or RTMNU was established on 4th August, 1923 in Maharashtra. From six affiliated colleges at the time of its inception, it currently holds a jurisdiction over 400+ colleges. From a mere 927 students at the beginning, the number of students studying at RTMNU became 9000 by 1947. It changed campus during 1972 – 1973 to its current address.
A state university, it is UGC recognized and UGC funded. It is a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU). 2010 web ranking of world universities by 4icu.org has Nagpur University at 5999th place. It has received a B grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
RTMNU has diversified its departments and courses along the years. In 1958, the arts and social sciences courses started, though it was in 1963, when science and teaching courses began, that true expansion happened.
Over the past few years, professional courses have also been added to the already extensive range. These courses include those in the fields of management, mass communication, fine arts, library science and physical education.
What is most commendable about the erstwhile-known-as-Nagpur University is the dedication to its local need-based education: non-formal methods of education that reach out to the working population in the state. Examples of such methods include training programs the area of biotechnology and Adult and continuing education programs. Moreover, the usage of e-learning technology (named E-suvidha), interdisciplinary courses, non-teaching training programs (such as the current training workshop on Molecular Techniques in Biosciences) all add to the university’s objective of becoming more than an institute of learning. There is even a rural, backward development program available at Gadchiroli sub-centre.
